Talk about Soup Kitchens

I volunteer once a month at a free meal center for the homeless.

저는 한 달에 한 번씩 노숙자를 위한 무료 급식 센터에서 봉사를 하고 있습니다. 

The volunteer organization is run by Catholic nuns.

봉사 단체는 천주교 수녀님이 운영하시는 곳입니다. 

Members of a volunteer group and church goers call pitch in to operate the soup kitchen six days a week.
봉사 단체 회원들과 성당 교인들이 모두 도와가며 무료 급식소를 주 6일 운영하고 있습니다.


More than 150 people drip in to eat each day.

하루에 150명 이상이 식사를 하러 오십니다. 

Most of the people who prepare the food have cooking experience.

음식을 만들어 주시는 분들은 대부분 요리 경력이 있는 분들입니다.

Younger, inexperienced people are mainly responsible for doing the dishes and cleaning up.

경력이 없는 젊은 사람들은 주로 설거지를 하며 뒷정리를 합니다.

I get to thinking a lot when I volunteer.
봉사를 하는 동안 저는 많은 생각을 하게 됩니다. 


I hope that the bright smiles and kind influence of this service are conveyed through the warm meals.

이 급식 봉사를 통해 밝은 미소와 선한 영향력이 따뜻한 밥 한 끼에 잘 전달되기를 바랍니다.

I also hope that this type of volunteer work will be able to help change society for the better.
 또한 이러한 봉사 활동이 사회를 좋은 방향으로 변화시키는 데도 도움이 될 수 있으면 좋겠습니다.

음식을 만들어 주시는 분들은 대부분 요리 경력이 있는 분들입니다.
Most of the people who prepare the food have cooking experience.
요리 경험이 없어도 라면은 끓일 수 있다.
You don't need to have cooking experience to cook instant noodles.
요리 경력이 있는 사람들에게는 쉽다.
It's easy for people who have cooking experience.

2. get to thinking a lot 많은 생각을 하게 되다

봉사를 하는 동안 저는 많은 생각을 하게 됩니다.
I get to thinking a lot when I volunteer.
나는 잠들기 전에 많은 생각을 하게 된다.
I get to thinking a lot before I fall asleep.
사람들은 혼자 있으면 생각이 많아진다.
People get to thinking a lot when they are alone.

3. change society for the better 사회를 좋게 변화시키다

이러한 봉사 활동이 사회를 좋은 방향으로 변화시키는 데 도움이 될 수 있으면 좋겠습니다.
I hope that this type of volunteer work will be able to help change society for the better.
사회를 좋게 변화시키려면 우리가 함께 힘을 모아야 한다.
We need to work together to change society for the better.
누구든지 사회를 좋게 변화시키는 데 기여할 수 있다.
Everyone can contribute to change society for the better.

[Dialogue Practice]

A: You do volunteer work every weekend, don't you?
B: Yes, I work at a free meal center.
A: That's wonderful.
B: It feels very rewarding to help the elderly in need get at least one hot meal every day.
A: How long do you volunteer each time you go?
B: I usually help out for about five hours.

 

A: 주말마다 봉사 활동을 하시죠?
B: 네, 무료 급식소에서 하고 있어요.
A: 좋은 일 하시네요.
B: 형편이 어려운 어르신들이 매일 한 끼라도 따뜻한 식사를 드시게 도와드리니 보람을 느껴요.
A: 갈 때마다 몇 시간 정도 봉사를 하세요?
B: 대략 5시간 정도 돕고 와요.
