Becoming an Urban Farmer

This spring, our family came into possession of a small vegetable garden.

The land is owned and operated by the city government.

Plots of land are rented out to residents of the city for a year through a lottery system.

After we talked it over with our kids, we chose which crops we wanted to eat and planted seedlings together.

Over 20 different types of plants are growing in our garden.

They include vegetables like lettuce, tomatoes, peanuts, carrots, and broccoli, as well as fragrant herbs like basil and rosemary.

We plan to hold a barbecue party when the vegetables grow enough to harvest.

We are counting the days until then, visiting whenever we get a chance to water the plants.

When we see the leaves growing larger and flowers bursting into bloom, it feels filling even if we don't eat a thing.

[Dialogue Practice]

A: Wow, these tomatoes look mouthwatering. They're really fresh.

B:  I grew them myself.

A:  Really?

B:  Yes, our family has a vegetable garden.

A:  Oh, so you grew them there.

B:  That's right. we grow everything organically, so they are better for you, too.
